Broda joins 2009 Squeaky Wheel Tour!
-
October 8, 2009
2009 Squeaky Wheel™ Tour
October 17TH – November 4TH
Broda's performances on October 9th and 10th and November 6th, 7th, 13th, and 14th are very special dates, because these events are part of the 4th International Squeaky Wheel Tour for the Missing held from October 17th-November 4th every year. This all started because fellow musician Gina Bos walked out of a pub after a performance on October 17, 2000 and vanished. GINA for Missing Persons FOUNDation was created in her honor to utilize entertainment to educate the public about missing people. Over 850,000 missing person’s reports are made in the US each year. We only hear about the ones that have the most public appeal. The Squeaky Wheel Tour® is a 19-day event where hundreds of artists, entertainers, churches and gatherings all over the world profile missing people. Though this is a sad subject, we feel it is truly a celebration of hope because we have this opportunity to tell you about a local missing person and, by working together and simply posting a flyer wherever you may roam in the next week, we have a very real chance of bringing someone's loved one home. Since this grassroots campaign began in 2001, over 400 people profiled collectively at events like this have been FOUND. So, let’s have a great time and know that just by taking a flyer and posting it one of us could be the missing piece to bring someone home.
Please check Broda's calendar for the events taking place on these dates and plan to attend. Not only will you be able to take in a great show filled with music, but YOU could make the difference in finding the missing person(s) presented at the shows!

Be a Blessing: You won't regret it, and they'll never forget it!
-
September 14, 2009
When I was in high school, I received an envelope in the mail addressed to me, but the return address was ALSO my address. I opened the envelope to find a $100 bill with only a little note that said, "Keep On With Your Music". To this day, I do not know who sent me that note and $100. I sometimes wish I knew, but I figure it is someone who has somehow kept up with the fact that I am extremely active musically, be it teaching, directing, songwriting, or performing, and therefore I'm blessing them in return by doing exactly as they requested. I still have the note in my scrapbook, even though I don't need to; the memory is always there like a "Kodak moment" burned in my mind. I think of it often still to this day and what a blessing it was (and has continued to be for me).
Since that time, I have been blessed by many wonderful people. An unexpected payment of my vet bill even though my dog still passed away, groceries gathered together and gifted to me by friends when I was totally down and out financially, a generous contribution to allow me to complete the production of my debut CD . . . or even simply, a shoulder to cry on or a good belly laugh when I needed it most.
When these blessings were bestowed upon me unexpectedly, I remember asking my parents, "How am I EVER going to pay them back"? My father said, "There is one thing you should know when it comes to blessings, Brenda. When people bless you when you need it most, it is a blessing for them to be able to do it". I heard his words and generically responded with something like, "oh", but I never TRULY believed that was true . . . maybe didn't even REALLY understand it . . . until this past Friday.
Friday afternoon, I was feeling pretty bad...nauseated by the antibiotics I'd been taking (fearing I might yurk all over my office computer screen), and dealing with a horrible nagging pain in my side. After fighting it for awhile at work, I finally decided to go home and lay down with a heating pad for the rest of the afternoon and pray I would feel better for the mass company we had invited to our house the next day. On my way, I stopped at the grocery store to pick up some yogurt (to offset the antibiotics a bit more).
There were at least 3 or 4 cashiers working, and all of the lines were very short. I was second in line behind a woman who was clearly just purchasing the essentials, a little bit of food, toilet paper, and milk. Once her items were rung up, her total came to $43.99. For those of you who do the shopping in your household, you know that, despite the price, that doesn't amount to much by way of "groceries". The lady proceeded to remove several cards from her wallet. It turned out they were prepaid cards. She attempted to run each one for the total without success. She apologized to the cashier (who patiently said, "oh you're fine"), and proceeded to dig in her purse. She pulled out a piece of paper which had what she thought the remaining balances were for each prepaid card. She asked the cashier to run certain balances for each. Beep. Beep. Beep. Still not successful. The lady kept her back and face hid from the mere two of us in line behind her, as she again apologized to the cashier (who again, very sweetly and patiently said, "you're fine, don't worry about it"). I was pleased with the cashier's behavior. Despite the pain in my side and queasy stomach, I too, was understanding. Been there. Done that. Unfortunately, the lady behind me was a different story, giving a continual, impatient, audible sigh. I shot her a look that said, "There are plenty of lines open. If you are that miserable and in a hurry, pick up your crap and go to another line". (How fortunate for her if she has never been someone who has had to pay for tampons with penny rolls . . . perhaps that has been HER blessing in life).
It was a good 20 minutes I stood there as the lady in front of me continued to call out amounts to the cashier to see if each card had enough to cover it. At last, she had the balance due down to $3 and some change. The lady looked into what few bags she had in the cart, pulled out this tiny bag of snack cookies, and returned it to the cashier to deduct from her total. The cashier did as she asked, put the small bag to the side, and gave the lady her new total: $1.32. The lady scrounged through her purse and produced a dollar bill. The cashier deducted it. The lady then began to dig, and dig, and dig for the remaining .32 cents. The cashier said, "We're good". The lady responded, "No, I owe you, $.32 cents". The cashier responded, "Don't sweat it. We're good. I got it".
I smiled at the cashier as the lady, hung her head, whispered a "thank you", and proceeded to push her cart out the door. Before the cashier even touched my yogurt, I pointed to the bag of snack cookies she had put aside and said, "Throw those on here, too, if you would". The cashier didn't hesitate, replied, "you got it", and (aware of what I was doing) proceeded to quickly ring me through so I could get out the door before the lady drove away. The cashier and I didn't not say any more to each other except for "Have a great day" as our knowing smiles to each other said all they needed to say.
I took a long, steady, but quick stride out the door, as I could see the lady was still pushing her cart to her car. The timing could not have been more perfect, as it was not my intention to embarrass her, nor to bring any attention to myself. Her back was to me as she stopped her cart on the diagonal at the back, left corner of her vehicle. Just as I approached, she went to unlock the back of her car. I quickly dropped the snack bag of cookies on top of her purse sitting in the cart, and made the sharp left out of sight between her car and the one parked beside it. As fortune would have it, I was parked across the entrance street in another area of the parking lot directly across from her car. I quickly got in, and watched out of mere curiosity.
Just as I closed the car door, I looked up to see her turning back to her cart. She reached for her bags, and froze for a moment. Then she walked to the other end of the cart and picked up the bag of cookies. She stared at them for a moment, and then looked up towards the store, to her left, to her right, and behind her. She froze for another moment, and then stared back at the cookies. Then she looked straight up in the air as if God himself had reached down and placed them there, and the most beautiful smile beamed from her face. She looked down at the bag of cookies in her hand once more, as she loaded one bag of groceries at a time with the other hand. Once her cart was empty, she scanned the parking lot again. No one was in sight. Then she just stopped, stared at the cookies, and smiled.
As I sat there watching from the car the same smile beamed across my face and tears of joy fell from my eyes, I immediately bowed my head and thanked God for giving me the opportunity to truly understand what Dad had meant, and I quickly proceeded to drive out of sight to head home...noticing that for those brief moments, I did not feel queasy, nor did I feel any pain.
To be a silent blessing to this stranger and see the amazing smile on her face from afar was truly one of the most incredible feelings I've ever felt. Friday night, and through the weekend, we had more and more friends arrive at our home little by little, and I spent the weekend reminded of how each and every one of them have blessed me in their own way through the years, and I hope I, too, have somehow blessed them.
We never know what impact we can have on a person's life, a person's day, or even a person's MOMENT. Be it a big burden we can help lift off of someone's shoulders, or something as small and simple as a dollar something snack bag of cookies, Be a Blessing: You won't regret it, and they'll never forget it!
